For 20, years the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has been implementing programs to comply with the National CSO Control Policy's Nine Minimum Controls and Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs).These programs improved water quality, reduced beach closings and improved conveyance to treatment facilities.Dry weather overflows from the sewer system are prohibited and NYCDEP's goal is to eliminate these discharges. As a result of NYCDEP's continuing efforts in this regard, the number and volumes of dry weather overflows resulting from pump station and regulator blockages and malfunctions continue to decline to record low levels.The occurrence of any dry weather overflow is promptly abated and reported to the NYSDEC Region 2 Office within 24 hours. A written report is also submitted within five (5) days of the confirmed time of occurrence.
