Burrola, Flor

Flor Burrola was born in El Paso, Texas but was raised in Los Angeles, California. She received her Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles. Post-Graduation, Flor volunteered for the City of Los Angeles' LA Sanitation & Environment and was hired to join the Wastewater Engineering Services Division as a full-time employee in 2015. She is currently working with the Integrated Resource Planning team focusing on multi-benefit and collaborative projects that will lead to smarter land use practices, healthier watersheds, greater reliability of our wastewater systems, increased efficiency and operation, enhanced livable communities, resilience against climate change, and protection of public health and our environment. In her free time she enjoys traveling, hiking, biking, and spending time with her family.

Incorporating Climate Resiliency into Project Planning and Development

Abstract

The City of Los Angeles (City), LA Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) is continually and actively planning to improve and build the City’s resiliency. A customized tool to provide an overview of the vulnerabilities and potential impacts associated with climate hazards to the City’s infrastructure and assets is a new initiative that contributes to a safer and stronger community. The climate resiliency evaluation tool, developed for management to provide preliminary considerations for identifying and quantifying climate risks for rehabilitation and planned projects, will be integrated into the decision making process. The objective of the tool is to develop an accessible, straight forward and comprehensive process that can be used for all types of LASAN projects. The integration of the tool into an updated business processes, along with policy changes, supports environmental justice and adaptive planning for climate resiliency, and facilitates the identification and implementation of adaptation measures for at-risk facilities.
