Chakrabarti, Alicia

Alicia is the manager of the wastewater environmental services division at East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). In this role, she oversees the resource recovery program, industrial discharge section, and field services, which are all responsible in one way or another for the inputs EBMUD wastewater treatment plant. Alicia received a BA from Barnard in environmental science, and MS degrees from University of California at Berkeley in energy and resource and in civil and environmental engineering; She is a licensed civil engineer in California.

Investigating and Tracking 60-Year Old Interceptor Contaminants

Abstract

Elevated influent metals concentrations were detected at the influent of the East Bay Municipal Utility District wastewater treatment plant leading to extensive investigations and monitoring activities. It was determined that the robust cleaning procedures employed in preparation for a major sliplining project had liberated particulate metals previously adhered to the bottom of the 267 centimeter, 70 year old concrete interceptor pipe. Although the majority of the sediment at the bottom of the interceptors was removed, a sufficient amount could not be captured and traveled to the front of the treatment plant resulting in total suspended solids concentrations an order of magnitude above typical and very high concentrations of metals. The careful tracking through the treatment process and proactive activities to maximize capture of solids, hold and test grit, and divert biosolids from land application, ensured continued regulatory compliance; however, the precise fate of the metals could not be fully characterized.
