Ellis, Nicholas

Nick Ellis is a Senior Associate in Hazen and Sawyer's Boston office. Nick is a PE and has a BS in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University. He has worked as a design engineer and project manager on the design and construction of municipal water and wastewater facilities for more than 15 years. Most recently, Nick served as the Project Engineer and technical lead for the MWRA's Nut Island Headworks Odor Control and HVAC upgrades project, which included upgrade and replacement of systems and equipment installed at the facility as part of the MWRA's Boston Harbor project, which he'll present here today.

MWRA Nut Island Odor Control: Using Old and New Technology to Maintain Operations and Access Throughout Construction

Abstract

This paper will explore how Hazen and Sawyer and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) utilized traditional technology (such as influent and effluent airflow sampling, analysis of historical data, and ambient odor sampling) and new (such as 3D laser scanning, and 4 dimensional design) to determine the best options for replacement of the odor control system at the Nut Island Headworks, and stage construction, allowing the facility to continue operating, while upgrading the systems operational flexibility and redundancy, and limiting disturbance to the public park above. The paper will focus on the use of 3D laser scanning and 3 and 4 dimensional design, to facilitate the staging of specific construction tasks to ensure that the Nut Island Headworks continuously provides adequate ventilation, while preventing the release of odorous air to the surrounding community and park. In addition, it will explore how this approach resulted in a construction contract that allows the community to continue to access and enjoy the surrounding park.
