Integrated Used Water Management for Resource Recovery: The Right Time for a Systems Approach

Abstract

Throughout the world many large metropolitan areas are experiencing water shortages, resulting from ﬁxed available water supply sources, population growth, and climate change. To lessen current and future water shortage problems, address resource shortages and manage nutrient issues, integrated region-wide sustainable wastewater management programs must be developed. As part of the new integrated and sustainable strategies, various forms of water reuse, including planned potable reuse, can play a vital and crucial role in helping to alleviate water shortage problems while nutrient management strategies can address environmental impact of nutrient discharges to strained water bodies. Because centralized wastewater collection systems are generally arranged to route wastewater to remote locations for treatment, both nonpotable and potable reuse in urban areas is often inhibited by infrastructure costs for transporting and storing reclaimed water at or near the points of use (i.e., typically far from treatment plant location). To maximize the potential beneﬁts of wastewater reuse, including nutrient management, wastewater treatment and management strategies in metropolitan regions must be rethought.
