Mojtaba Farrokh Shad (Moji Shad) is an engineer at Carollo Engineers Inc. Hi s works focus on water reuse and novel wastewater treatment process for direct potable reuse (DPR) and indirect potable reuse (IPR). Moji earned his second master of science from CalPoly Pomona in civil engineering environmental and water resources, and his first master of science was earned in construction engineering management from AUT.

Pilot Study on Evaluating Treatment of CEC in RO Brine from Hybrid Treatment Train Produced Water by Microbial Fuel Cell

Abstract

Because of the relatively high cost of energy consumption when producing higher quality effluent for reclamation, there is a growing need to develop a simplified lower cost treatment process to achieve the same or better removal of contaminants, including CECs. In this study a novel treatment train was used that eliminated conventional activated sludge treatment and consisted of primary sedimentation plus MF plus RO plus UV/AOP. This train produces an organic-rich reject from the RO process (concentrate) which introduces some opportunities to capture the potential energy that exists in this stream. Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC) were used to convert the existing chemical energy to power and simultaneously reduce CECs. Anti-inflammatories, components of plastics, contrast media, lipid regulators and statins achieved 75% to 100% removal. The power generated by the Single Chamber Microbial Fuel Cells (SCMFCs) was 1,532 kWh/MG and the power generated by the large MFC was 819 kWh/MG.
