Kristen Jenkins is the global industrial water technology lead for GHD. She has a Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Tennessee, and a Master's degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech. Prior to GHD, Ms. Jenkins was with Southern Research, CH2M and Texaco. Her 25 year career has been focused on industrial wastewater treatment. Her expertise includes physical/chemical treatment, biological treatment, thermal evaporation, water permitting and compliance, and development of treatment and water management strategies for industrial water.

The Value of Water Chemistry Modeling in Establishing Bench Testing Conditions for Copper Removal in the Presence of Ammonia

Abstract

A facility in Indiana produces aluminum alloys from recycled material and operates an on-site landfill. Leachate from the landfill with low concentrations of copper, zinc, and ammonia is discharged to a Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW), while leachate that exceeds POTW discharge limits is collected and shipped offsite for disposal. Treatment options were evaluated for the higher strength leachate to reduce levels of copper, zinc, and ammonia and meet POTW pretreatment limits. A soluble copper-ammonia complex was observed in water chemistry modeling using OLI’s Studio software. As the pH was increased to 12 in the model, copper precipitates formed. Bench testing of pH values of 10, 11, and 12 based on the modeling. Typically metal hydroxide solubility curves vary, however, most do not go above a pH of 11. Bench testing confirmed that soluble copper concentrations were reduced significantly in the pH 12 test. A pretreatment system is currently being designed.
