Disinfection of Primary Effluent: Bench Scale Evaluation of Peracetic Acid to Achieve Enterococcus Limits for CEPT Marine Discharge

Abstract

Peracetic acid (PAA) has gained popularity as a wastewater disinfectant in recent years due to its inherent advantages over established disinfectants. A bench scale study was performed to assess the viability of PAA as a disinfectant for chemically-enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) effluent for a marine discharge in Hagåtña, Guam. Goals of the study included optimization of the CEPT process to achieve enhanced effluent quality, testing the feasibility of PAA to adequately disinfect effluent from the optimized CEPT process, and to investigate the further optimization of the CEPT process to enhance pathogen inactivation. On-site analysis was performed for water quality constituents and the regulated pathogen, Enterococcus. The results of the bench scale study showed that PAA is a viable disinfectant for the CEPT effluent and suggested that increasing CEPT coagulant dose aids in the disinfection process significantly by lowering the initial Enterococcus count prior to PAA injection
