Expanding Whole Plant Simulation for Monitoring and Managing Advanced Processes in Water Reclamation and Water Treatment Plants including Reuse downstream of WWTPs

Abstract

Optimal operation of water reuse systems requires timely and informed decision making in response to fluctuating operational conditions. Advanced process models can be used as day-to-day tools to develop reliable operational strategies. IViewOps3 (version 3.0), an intelligent process simulator, has been used in several wastewater treatment facilities to evaluate and optimize daily plant performance. The process simulator of IViewOps3, however, is based on IWA biochemical models (e.g., ASM, ADM, etc.) and therefore limited to secondary treatment. This paper discusses the development and implementation of a physicochemical model for version 4.0 of IViewOps, capable of simulating advanced processes including pH (acid/base systems), precipitation, oxidation, adsorption, biofiltration, carbonation, chlorination, etc. The full plant model setup and calibration results for the UOSA (Upper Occoquan Service Authority) water reclamation facility in IViewOps4 are also presented. It is discussed how automated data transfer mechanisms are used to obtain current operating conditions from plant information systems (SCADA, LIMS, etc.) to run and calibrate the model on a periodic basis. In addition, the paper explains the new architecture of IViewOp4 which decouples the mathematical model from the main software code. The entire model library has been reprogrammed into a new, open-sourced C#.NET DLL (Dynamic Link Library) project, which grants users complete access to the model’s code and the ability to modify or add desired parameters and equations.
