Joshua Snowdon works in the process engineering department of Evoqua Water Technologies Canada Ltd. He has been working with Evoqua in this role for 4 years and his focus has revolved around design, start-up, piloting, and R&D for anaerobic wastewater treatment technologies in industrial applications. Specifically, he has a strong focus in anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology, having a hand in 5+ years of cumulative pilotting run-time applying various membrane technologies and starting-up/commissioning several full-scale AnMBR systems.

Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) for Food Processing Wastewater Treatment: Post-Construction Start-Up and 1-Year of Continuous Operation

Abstract

An AnMBR system was started-up and commissioned at Ken’s Foods’ production plant in Lebanon, Indiana, in summer 2019. The system features a 2.2 MG (8,300 m3) precast concrete CSTR with geomembrane cover system, two covered membrane tanks, biogas flare and utilization, as well as a process control building. The membrane modules are Kubota flat-sheet membranes composed of chlorinated polyethylene and a nominal pore size of 0.2 µm. Even through large day-to-day loading variances, the system has been able to consistently meet discharge requirements, maintaining an average COD removal efficiency of 99%, with an average effluent BOD concentration of 30 mg/L, an average effluent TSS concentration of 12 mg/L, and an average effluent FOG concentration of 5 mg/L. Membranes show no signs of fouling after one year of continuous filtration.

Integration of Biological Biogas Scrubbing System for Treatment of High Sulfate Wastewater Using AnMBR Technology: From Piloting to Full-Scale System

Abstract

Pilot and full-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) wastewater treatment systems were installed and operated at a biodiesel refining plant in Missouri. The biodiesel production wastewater contains high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD, average value of 49,400 mg/l), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), fats, oils, and greases (FOG, average value of 2,200 mg/l), and sulfate (average value of 4,600 mg/l). The pilot study was used to evaluate the feasibility of anaerobically treating the high-strength industrial wastewater. Sulfide toxicity on the anaerobic bacteria, posed by the high influent sulfate concentration, was prevented in the pilot-scale system by integrating a biogas scrubbing system into the biogas recirculation system. This concept was applied to the full-scale system and the full-scale system has been able to effectively treat the wastewater, maintaining average COD, FOG, and total suspended solids (TSS) removal efficiencies greater than 96%. The full-scale system features an 8,100 m3 (2.15 MG) bolted steel tank with floating geomembrane cover system, two concrete, sealed membrane tanks, a sulfur oxidation (SO) tank, and a biological biogas scrubbing system. The membrane modules are Kubota flat-sheet membranes composed of chlorinated polyethylene with a nominal pore size of 0.2 μm.
