Emerging Contaminants in a Circular Economy: How Biosolids Programs May Be Disrupted by PFAS

Abstract

Poly- and Perflouroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a class of compounds that have gained significant attention from the public and the scientific community due to their prevalence, persistence, and toxicity. PFAS have been used for decades in nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabric, firefighting foams, and food packaging. The most commonly studied and regulated PFAS are in the family of perfluorooctanoic acids (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acids (PFOS), but there are thousands of other PFAS compounds. The term PFAS includes both perfluoroalkyl substances, in which every Carbon-Hydrogen bond (C-H bond) has been replaced by a Carbon-Fluorine (C-F bond), and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which have both C-F bonds and C-H bonds. PFAS can be further subdivided based on carbon chain length (i.e. "short-chain" vs. "long-chain") and functional groups (e.g. carboxylic acids or ethers) (Figure 1). These C-F bonds give PFAS their useful commercial properties, but also create highly persistent compounds in the environment.
