Innovative Water Reuse Scheme to Integrate Water Reclamation Systems for Agricultural & Industrial Applications: A Case Study in Itoman City

Abstract

Itoman city is one of the most water shortage areas in Japan and has developed a water reclamation system using a UF+UV (ultrafiltration + ultraviolet radiation) process for agricultural water reuse. However, not all amount of reclaimed water is consumed every month due to the seasonal fluctuation of agricultural water consumption. On the other hand, the demand for industrial water has been increasing in Itoman city. This study aimed to investigate the applicability of reclaimed water to industrial use by evaluating the reclaimed water quality from a pilot-scale UF+RO (reverse osmosis) system and by calculating the cost of reclaimed water supply. A questionnaire survey to industrial companies was also conducted to understand the current uses of industrial water and acceptable cost of reclaimed water. This study suggest that the UF+RO process can provide suitable water for industrial use with the lower price than tap water in Okinawa.
