I am a third-year PhD student from Northwestern University. I am currently working on an on-site EBPR project which is a collaboration between Northwestern Unviersity and DC Water. This is my second time presenting at WEFTEC and the first time presenting in person. I am excited to be back to Chicago.

Increased P Assimilation of Fast-growing Heterotrophs Increases P Capture Potential in High-rate Activated Sludge Systems

Abstract

Increased N assimilation by fast growing carbon adsorption heterotrophic organisms (AHOs) was recognized previously as a key explanatory factor leading to higher than expected nitrogen removal in high-rate activated sludge (HRAS) systems. However, the P assimilation stoichiometry and contribution to overall P removal in HRAS of AHOs has to date not been investigated. This study confirmed increased P assimilation in high-rate systems without chemical P removal based on two pilot studies. The SUMO2C model was calibrated to predict observed P assimilation, removal, and content of the HRAS sludge. Current models have significantly underestimated the potential of HRAS for nutrient capture, especially at sludge retention time (SRTs) ≤ 0.5 days.

Phosphorus assimilation of activated sludge was observed to increase with decreasing SRT (Truong et al., WEFTEC, 2020). Therefore, in this paper, a calibrated model from Hauduc (2019) was used to match the observed phosphorus assimilation derived from data. To match the observed phosphorus assimilation, the P content of AHOs parameter from SUMO19 model was modified.

Phosphorus Management in High-Rate Activated Sludge Systems: The Roles of Enhanced Assimilation and Biological P Removal

Abstract

In HRAS systems, P assimilation stoichiometries appear to increase at solids retention times (SRTs) below 0.5 days, which has key implications for managing P at short SRTs. At moderate SRT, 2.7-day aerobic SRT, a combination of P assimilation and biological P removal resulted in overall removal of 2.1 mg orthophosphate (OP)-P/L. Combining benefits of increased P assimilation of short SRT sludge with potential enhanced biological P removal (EBPR) activity at moderate SRT using physical selectors for SRT decoupling will further increase potential for combined organics and nutrient redirection and recovery.
