Jianjia Yu is a Research Scientist and Section Head in the Petroleum Recovery Research Center (PRRC) of the New Mexico Tech. He has 12 years' experience in the development of innovative membranes, especially the hollow fiber membrane fabrication and characterization, membrane module design and construction, mixed matrix membrane (MMMs), and novel membrane-based desalination process for water treatment and reuse.

Janus Hollow Fiber Membrane-based DCMD Process for Desalination of High-Salinity Oilfield Produced Water

Abstract

The overall objective of this study is to study a novel Janus hollow fiber (HF) membrane-based direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) desalination process for the desalination of high-salinity produced water. Specifically, a novel polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) based Janus HF membrane was fabricated with a thin hydrophobic PVDF/Si-R outer surface and a thick hydrophilic PVDF/PEG inner surface. The DCMD desalination performance of the Janus HF membrane was thoroughly investigated to evaluate the energy efficiency of the desalination system.
