Sam Boswell is an odor control expert with over 17 years of experience in Water/Wastewater. Prior to becoming a principal technologist for Odor Control at Carollo Engineers in Costa Mesa, Sam was a Fresno State Bulldog and Cal Poly Pomona Bronco student athlete (pole vault) and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of California. He has a background in water wastewater construction prior to dedicating his career to the multi-disciplinary field of odor control. In his free time, Sam enjoys hiking, woodworking, motorcycles, and camping.

Abstract

Vapor-phase odor control systems are often comprised of one or more cylindrical tower scrubbers, ductwork, mist/grease eliminators, fans, pumps, ladders, platforms, instrumentation & custom control panels. As these systems get larger and the layout more complicated; design engineers should be aware of the adaptability of the system, the materials they're working with, and how to improve their design for the people who will be tasked with its long-term successful operation. Functional design is crucial in tying these components together, ensuring that the end-user will work in harmony with the equipment and not against it. Consider the 'payback' in time & safety of a few hours spent optimizing the footpath of an operator when the equipment will be in use for 25 or more years. The following should be a priority of an odor control system design once the basic equipment selection, sizing and placement has been determined: 1.Receiving feedback from the end users, operators, and maintenance staff, understanding the feedback, and representing their needs & concerns in the design. 2.Identifying safety concerns (e.g., tripping hazards, head injuries, falls, chemical exposure or access to safety showers, confined space entry) within either planned pathways or 'desire paths' for improved accessibility, and lower O&M risk and effort level. 3.Evaluating the equipment location, orientation, points of operator or maintenance interaction in a 3D environment and identify and design the efficient pathway through these points. 4.Updating standard equipment specifications with these features to form lasting improvements as well as emphasizing the latest in robust & low-maintenance instrumentation. This presentation will provide a methodology for improving O&M in our odor control systems, specification suggestions as well as compilations of WWTP staff experiences from a few large wastewater treatment plants in Southern California. Namely, Orange County Sanitation District, whose employees possess a treasure trove of experience in operating and maintaining large scale odor control systems and their design with the operator's safety and accessibility in mind.
