Description: Model Selection
Model Selection
Abstract
The WEF recently published the WEF Stormwater, Watershed, and Receiving Water Quality Manual. The manual features information on the history of modeling, capabilities of various models, model selection, and the future of modeling. This paper highlights the model selection process (Chapter 5). Selection considerations discussed in the chapter are the purpose and objectives of modeling, available models and features, the appropriate levels of detail, necessary water quality constituents and processes, and other model features that may facilitate model set-up and application. The chapter provides information on a number of public domain models that are believed to represent a range of applications. Discussion of model features and capabilities identifies water quality constituents that are commonly modeled, comparing and contrasting the capabilities of the selected models to simulate those constituents for generation, transport and fate. Other model selection considerations include model development tools, availability of technical support, and availability of documentation.
