Implementation of a Comprehensive Green Infrastructure Program at the Chautauqua Institution
Abstract
A TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) for Chautauqua Lake was developed which requires a 46% reduction in phosphorus loads from developed land in the watershed. To assist in meeting this requirement, the Chautauqua Institution has developed and started implementation of a comprehensive plan to use green infrastructure to collect and treat water wherever possible on areas they own or control.Three green infrastructure projects were designed and constructed at the Chautauqua Institution within the last two years. These projects include a constructed wetland, stream daylighting with bioswales, and streambank stabilization/naturalization. The projects were chosen as pilot projects based on their visibility, potential positive impact on Chautauqua Lake, and ability to act as models for future green infrastructure efforts at the Chautauqua Institution. These projects have already had a significant positive influence at the Chautauqua Institution. Residents better understand green infrastructure and the staff is learning how to construct green infrastructure.
