Abstract
HRSD Boat Harbor Treatment Plant (BHTP) a high-rate activated sludge plant facility employs an anoxic selector process for nitrification and partial denitrification and operates a multiple hearth furnace (MHF). All wastewater treatment plants that operate a MHF and are required to nitrify must manage the inhibitory effects of cyanide in the scrubber water (SW) return flows.Three 22 L sequencing batch reactors (SBR’s) with different configurations were used to quantify the impact of cyanide and SW on nitrification and develop and test novel processes that In addition to minimize cyanide inhibition particularly for plants with limited footprint. investigating the effect of cyanide on nitrification, three aeration strategies; Conventional DO control, Ammonia Based Aeration Control (ABAC) and, Ammonia vs NOx Control (AVN) were investigated at the BHTP with results showing AVN strategy as a great option for TN removal, and reduced energy and alkalinity consumption.
