Collection and Treatment of Variable Salinity Low Nutrient Oily Wastewater Generated from Ships; Lessons Learned after 15 Years with a New Utility System
Abstract
When a US Naval vessel is berthed at the Norfolk Naval Station (Virginia), the pier provides all electrical, steam, water, wastewater utility services. Beginning in 1999, the Navy expanded utility service to include pier side collection of oily waste/waste oil (OWWO) discharges. An activated sludge treatment subsequently treats this highly variable waste stream and demonstrates innovative approaches to industrial waste management. This paper will review the case history of the collection and treatment infrastructure with respect to design, maintenance, and operational requirements.
