PRIVATIZATION OF WATER SERVICES IN CHILE: THE EXPERIENCE OF AGUAS ANDINAS IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF SANTIAGO
Abstract
The successful experience of Aguas Andinas in providing water and sanitation services to the population of Santiago de Chile and its metropolitan area is described.Aguas Andinas S.A. is the main water company in Chile, serving nearly 6 million inhabitants. The controlling companies, Suez and Agbar, are leaders in the water sector with a strong commitment and experience in water supply and wastewater treatment services worldwide. The commitment of Aguas Andinas is of major proportions, being the biggest environmental project in the history of Chile: US 700 millions, 16 wastewater treatment plants with sewer systems, full coverage for the population of Greater Santiago in less than 10 years. In fact, in only 3 years, Aguas Andinas is treating already 73% of the sewage discharges to international standars. This accomplishment has been mainly based on the stability and comprehensive organization of the regulatory framework of the water sector in Chile. Other aspects of this positive experience will be described.
