OXYCAIR™ SOLUTION FOR BIOSOLIDS MANAGEMENT – PULP AND PAPER SECONDARY SLUDGE MANAGEMENT CASE STUDIES
Abstract
A new low-energy cell lysis technology provides a solution for many secondary sludge (biosolids) problems. This innovative technology has maturated to become a very attractive and economical alternative to other secondary sludge stabilization strategies and secondary sludge management methods. This chemical-free technology is based on concurrent physical mechanisms occurring within multiple reactor vessels. The resultant process stream is returned directly to the bioreactor as a nutrient supplement without causing massic or organic overloading. The excess biomass stream or Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) is transformed into a solution, rich in dissolved oxygen, and containing nutrients and micronutrients originating within bacterial cells. The innovative solution for secondary sludge management problems (costs, odor, volume) provides immediate and significant cost savings (pulp production, mixed sludge management (Primary and secondary sludges)) and environmental impact reductions such as GreenHouse Gas, leachate, and associated environmental risks.Following significant industrial full-scale demonstrations, a one-year integration and R&D project on secondary sludge stabilization/treatment was realized in a pulp and paper mill wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).One-year municipal demonstration project on biosolids treatability is currently underway at a Canadian municipal wastewater treatment plant.
