Regional Approach to Maximize Reuse Opportunities in North San Diego County
Abstract
Southern California faces many water supply challenges - droughts, climate change, population growth, and legal and environmental constraints combine to reduce or strain water supply reliability, particularly water imported from the Colorado River and Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay/Delta. Recycled water offers a local, reliable, and drought-proof approach for augmenting local and imported supplies. Eleven water and wastewater agencies in North San Diego County have joined together to develop a Regional Recycled Water Facilities Plan for North San Diego County to maximize reuse in a cost effective manner and set up State and Federal funding opportunities. This plan assists North San Diego County water and wastewater agencies in identifying the benefits of regionalization of existing and planned reclamation systems to further maximize the use of recycled water in a cost effective manner. Regionalization of facilities allows recycled water to play an even more significant role in meeting the future water needs in the area. The intent of this study is to identify new local and regional recycled water projects that will provide additional recycled water supplies to the local water agencies beyond what they could utilize individually.
