Considerations for the Environmentally Safe Use of Passively-Dosed Chemicals to Enhance Industrial Stormwater Erosion and Treatment Controls
Abstract
Implementing traditional stormwater control measures at industrial sites does not always achieve the action levels defined in stormwater permits. Stormwater practitioners often turn to chemicals to aid and enhance the performance of erosion control and treatment control measures. An approach is needed for the safe selection and use of chemically enhanced stormwater control measures. This invited presentation will propose a decision framework that was developed using a review of existing practices and studies of environmental impacts. The speaker will solicit input from the audience on the existing state of practice and appropriate safeguards. Participation is encouraged as it will inform the final report which will provide insight to regulatory agencies that are considering developing guidance or regulations for treatment chemicals at industrial stormwater sites in California, with potential consideration in other jurisdictions. Project results will be posted at www.owp.csus.edu/passive-chemical-dose.
