Tavernola WWTP Retrofit Success Story: Four Times Capacity Increase by Converting Existing Structures to MBBR and Media Clarifier
Abstract
A municipal wastewater treatment plant in Italy, based on conventional activated sludge, was required to increase the treated capacity by 300%. The objective of this paper is to present the advantages and challenges in retrofit of a wastewater treatment plant. MBBR process followed by an innovative Media Clarifier was chosen as a sustainable solution, with reduced capital and operational costs, and simple maintenance works. It is concluded that this solution is easier and more economical than conventional solutions.
A municipal wastewater treatment plant in Italy, based on conventional activated sludge, was required to increase the treated capacity by 300% and improve its effluent quality. An upgrade with the MBBR process followed by an innovative Media Clarifier was chosen as the most cost-effective solution both for the upgrade itself and also OPEX. The plant was upgraded without building extra infrastructure for the biological reactor or secondary solids separation. The objective of this paper is to present the advantages upgrade design and its implementation and share the existing challenges the designers had to overcome.
