Secondary Clarifier Upgrades for Managing Extreme Floating Solids/Scum Conditions in a Petroleum Refinery Wastewater Treatment Unit
Abstract
This case study describes a petroleum refinery’s practical solution to a historical secondary clarifier floating solids problem based on a technical evaluation of upgrade alternatives and implementation of improvements. Almost three years of operating data illustrate the success of the upgrades via comparison of performance before and after installation of new equipment. The findings from the study will be useful to other wastewater treatment facilities facing similar issues, especially petroleum refineries processing opportunity crude oils.
