Phased Approach to Odor Control at Moccasin Bend WWTP
Abstract
The City of Chattanooga, Tennessee owns and operates the Moccasin Bend Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), which is the regional wastewater treatment facility for Chattanooga and its surrounding areas. The WWTP is permitted to treat 6,134 liters per second (140 million gallons per day) by secondary biological treatment plus 3,505 liters per second (80 mgd) of wet weather treatment. Odors associated with the plant are impacting the surrounding community as evident by documented complaints that reached the council and mayor's office. In addition to the odors emitted from the plant, the corrosive nature of the odorous gases is having a negative effect on certain components at the WWTP, including in the Centrifuge Building No. 2. The City recognized the problems associated with the odors from the plant and selected ARCADIS (with Webster Environmental Associates, Inc., as its sub-consultant) to evaluate, recommend and design improvements to mitigate odor issues at the WWTP.
