Life's a Bleach - The Cost-Effective Use of On-Site Generation of Sodium Hypochlorite for Drinking Water Disinfection at a Small Utility
Abstract
Recent developments in on-site sodium hypochlorite generation (OSHG) have opened this method of disinfection to much smaller utility operations than has ever been practical before. This safe, cost-effective and reliable method of disinfection can also provide some distinct advantages when used in areas of high population concentrations. Even as the use of chlorine gas remains the default method of disinfection because of its low start-up and operating costs, smart utility operators should consider alternative methods as they plan new treatment applications or the upgrade of existing plants. The use of sodium hypochlorite can have distinct advantages for the utility and the community that should be carefully considered.
