A PROACTIVE RMP PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAM: THE CITY OF FORT LAUDERDALE APPROACH

Amidst the onslaught of ever-increasing hazardous chemical regulatory burdens and anticipated public concern, the City of Fort Lauderdale embarked upon a proactive public education program in attempts to enter into dialogue with communities that surround their Risk Management Program (RMP) regulated facilities. The goal of the program was to educate the interested residents about facility operations, hazardous chemical utilization, the City's RMP, specific risk reduction strategies, and alternative disinfection systems. Furthermore, the City hoped to answer citizen questions concerning the use of hazardous chemicals, promote positive press coverage, increase public trust, and establish an ongoing relationship to facilitate future dialogue concerning related topics.
