Phyto-Technologies: Approaches and Challenges in the Design Application of Plant-based Cleanup Technologies on Environmentally Distressed Brownfields Land
Abstract
Approaches and challenges in bridging environmental remediation of brownfield sites using living planted systems (phyto-technologies) with progressive design strategies in urban land renewal will be illustrated. Natural remediation processes using living plants create a positive perception installing concerns for ongoing stewardship of the study sites, increased environmental value, generating aesthetic attractiveness during and after remediation, and demonstrating environmental responsibility by producing minimal environmental disturbance during operation. The presentation will address case studies of abandoned and derelict former industrial lands where redevelopment strategies involving phyto-technologies are based on temporary and interim land redevelopment patterns and uses.
