MOVING BED BIOFILM REACTOR PILOT STUDY FOR ORGANIC CHEMICAL REMOVAL FROM PHARMACEUTICAL WASTEWATER
Abstract
A pilot study was conducted of a moving bed biofilm reactor process to evaluate its effectiveness for the removal of target organic chemicals from a pharmaceutical wastewater. System performance was monitored for COD removal and biomass production as well as removal of specific organic compounds (toluene, tetrahydrofuran, acetone, and acetonitrile). In addition, analysis of the biological reactor off-gas was performed to evaluate the degree of stripping and to provide data for mass balance calculations. The pilot study results demonstrated acceptable levels of organic biodegradation; and therefore, the results were used as the basis for design and construction of the full-scale end-of-pipe treatment system.
