ASSET MANAGEMENT AND GIS INTEGRATION: NEW ORLEANS STYLE
Abstract
The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (S&WB) manages the City of New Orleans' sanitary sewage collection and transmission system which is over 100 years old and serves a population of approximately 500,000 people. It has undertaken a multi-year consent decree driven Sewer System Evaluation and Rehabilitation Program (SSERP) to identify and address structural and mechanical deficiencies in the wastewater collection system and to ensure that the system has adequate capacity. The program management strategies focused on establishing Management Information Systems to facilitate the coordination and control of information among various elements of the program. These systems not only provide means to reduce delays in decision making and decrease the amount of paperwork, but also improve the accuracy of information. In this paper, the authors will present the methodology and approach utilized to develop and implement a Program Management Information System based upon asset management principles through the union of Geographic Information System (GIS) ideals and industry standard project management philosophies.
