HOW TO KEEP MURPHY OUT OF YOUR INTERCEPTOR SEWER PROJECT
Abstract
Several large industrial facilities operate along the east side if the Tulsa International Airport and in the course of business, generate waste streams requiring disposal. Some of these waste streams contain significant industrial waste contributions. These industrial facilities date back to an early period of Tulsa where a collection system was not in place to properly serve them. Due to the nature of the waste load, historically treatment for these industries was through a deep well injection system.The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ), the delegated entity for the Clean Water Act in the State, served notice that this method of disposal would no longer be acceptable. This forced the industries to view alternate means for waste disposal. The only viable conclusion was to transport waste into the City of Tulsa collection system. Tied to this conclusion was the fact that ODEQ set a deadline for American Airlines to cease this method of disposal which resulted in the need for a fast pace solution. The anticipated costs of the project placed a large financial burden for each industry to resolve the issue independently, especially in light of the troubled aircraft industry. The solution called for a regional approach and the City of Tulsa stepped up.
