Abstract
INTRODUCTION In 1967 the spiral wound membrane format was commercialized, encasing flat sheet membrane between layers of feed spacer and permeate carrier materials (a leaf), with multiple leaves rolled into a cylinder. The spiral format is fundamentally characterized by decades proven, robust membrane structural integrity, superior hydraulic properties and favorable manufacturing efficiencies. Although the reverse osmosis industry adopted the spiral format over 35 years ago, the spiral was not applicable as a suspended solids filter, due to the lack of backflush capabilities.
