Out in the Ozone the Return of Ozone and the Hydroxyl Radical to Wastewater Disinfection
Abstract
The City of Phoenix is investigating the use of various disinfection technologies for its 91st Avenue wastewater treatment facility. Key to this investigation is the implementation of a UV system to meet State of Arizona, Class A+ disinfection requirements. During this evaluation, the range of alternatives was expanded to include ozonation and other advanced oxidation processes (AOP), to examine the potential for removal of emerging contaminants. This paper presents the findings of the investigations into both UV and ozone systems. The paper also summarizes the information used to select and evaluate the various disinfection alternatives.
