Implementing Energy Efficiency in Water/Wastewater To Reduce Costs
Abstract
In the manufacturing and industrial world, management is focused on creating a quality product at minimum cost. In this environment, all expenses that are part of the manufacturing process are closely monitored, even scrutinized. Therefore, the most conscientious facility needs to assess its water/wastewater systems. Facility personnel are often completely unaware of utility costs, including sewer, water, natural gas and electric. More importantly, they are not aware of their energy consumption. The Wisconsin Focus on Energy Industrial Program surveyed and assessed over 150 municipal and industrial water/wastewater systems across the state. They identified and assessed numerous opportunities to save energy without adversely impacting water quality or the manufacturing process it supported. Many of the opportunities were implemented and are saving energy, reducing maintenance and saving downtime. Real-world examples from actual facilities where significant energy savings were realized are presented to clearly show the value of implementing energy efficiency opportunities at water/wastewater systems at industrial sites. A summary of the water and wastewater industry "Energy Best Practice Guidebook" that was developed as part of the Focus on Energy industrial program is presented as a tool to utilize in initiating energy-efficient activities
