Abstract
Wastewater and drinking water utilities require reliable power to provide uninterrupted services. An extended loss of grid power to a wastewater treatment plant or critical pumping stations can lead to sewage back-ups and the discharge of raw sewage to the environment. Natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes and intentional acts such as a cyber attack have the potential to cause long-duration, widespread power outages. Wastewater utilities can sustain operations without grid power using generators or distributed energy resources such as combined heat and power, wind turbines, and solar panels.
