Developing Stormwater Strategic Asset Management Tools and Guidance on a National Scale: A Status Update on WRF’s Targeted Collaborative Research Project
Abstract
Municipalities, utilities, departments of transportation, and other agencies implementing stormwater programs have been building and operating stormwater infrastructure for many years without a systematic or consistent approach to collecting critical maintenance and performance data. With existing infrastructure aging and use of green infrastructure expanding, there is an urgent need to take a better approach to managing stormwater assets and understanding the long-term costs of maintenance and replacement. The Water Research Foundation (WRF), formerly the Water Environment and Reuse Foundation, will be performing a Technical Collaborative Research (TCR) Project in partnership with Arcadis and communities from across the nation to advance the understanding and use of asset management concepts for surface stormwater infrastructure on a national scale, and provide tools and guidance for strategic asset management developed specifically for stormwater infrastructure assets, including post-construction Best Management Practices (BMPs) and green infrastructure (GI). This paper presents the goals, rationale and scope of work for the research project.
