Description: Condition Assessment of Force Main

Abstract

The Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside (SAM) initiated a condition assessment on its Princeton Force Main (PFM) in December 2019 to assess the risk of imminent failure, and evaluate whether the pipeline is capable of performing reliably for at least the next 60 years. The condition assessment was performed in two phases. Phase one was a desktop assessment that included hydraulic modeling of the system and researching geologic conditions nearby. Phase two was a field assessment that involved walking the force main alignment, evaluating its appurtenances, sampling soil and groundwater surroudning the pipeline and determining pipe wall thickness using non-destructive testing (NDT) at three locations. The sampling and testing results indicated that the soil surrounding PFM is only midly corrosive, and the pipe line is in overall good condition with sufficient remaining wall thickness to last beyond its designed lifespan.
