Online Presentation of the Results of a Linear Mixed Model of Virus Inactivation with Chlorine

Abstract

Considerable virus removal is required in drinking water, but these guidelines have not been updated for decades. Although all viruses are regulated under the same framework, virus removal varies between viruses and at different environmental conditions. We used data collected from a systematic view to create a linear mixed model that predicts chlorine inactivation rates of viruses. Our model found that at a temperature of 20 °C and pH between 6 and 10, at least 10 out of 82 viruses did not achieve 4-log removal with required CT values under current EPA regulations. We made our model available on a website for the public to predict inactivation rates of any viruses included in the systematic review under any relevant conditions. We recommend that researchers use our model to evaluate their results in the context of previous researcher.
