The Good Modeling Practice Unified Protocol
An activated sludge model is a simplified representation of water resource recovery facility (WRRF) processes that can be used to estimate required aeration capacity, evaluate the potential for denitrification and biological phosphorus removal, predict solids production, and improve plant operation and control, among other things. The International Water Association (IWA) Good Modeling Practice (GMP) task group analyzed the similarities and differences in the previously published protocols and developed a unified protocol (Rieger et al., 2012) for process model application. The GMP unified protocol is also referred to in WEF MOP31 as a systematic guideline for modeling projects with different objectives. This OWWL document will give an introduction to the steps of the GMP unified protocol and its applications.
