Characterization of Fats, Oils, and Grease from Various New York City Water Resource Recovery Facilities

Abstract

The purpose of this study performed by Manhattan College was to characterize fats, oils and grease (FOG) from three New York City WRRFs. Inert material (plastics, wipes, wet-strength paper) were removed and quantified on a mass and volume basis. The remaining sample was then ground to produce a homogeneous mixture. Characterization parameters included chemical oxygen demand (COD), n-hexane extractable material (HEM), volatile fatty acids (VFAs), energy value (BTU), total solids (TS), metals, and density. Results for COD, HEM, metals, and VFAs were fairly consistent among the facilities. There was some variation in TS and BTU values among the three facilities. Density was also very consistent among all three facilities. Further studies recommended are biomethane potential (BMP/SMP) to determine the methane production rate from the co-digestion of this material or a mixture with food waste, determining concentrations of individual fatty acids, and determination of pathogens.
