Dr. Pankaj Chowdhury has received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Western University (Canada). He is currently working at TrojanUV's R&D as a research fellow. His current work addresses the removal of TOrCs/micropollutants (e.g., NSAID, antibiotics, and antidepressant) from drinking water utilizing UV based processes.

The Importance of pH in the Direct UV Photolysis of a Group of Pharmaceutical Compounds

Abstract

A systematic study on the pH-dependent direct UV photolysis of a group of organic compounds (ten pharmaceuticals and NDMA) was conducted using a collimated beam apparatus. The rates of direct photolysis of these organic compounds were also determined at two different pH (6.2 and 7.8) in a full-scale photoreactor (30 LP-UV lamps) with a maximum flow rate of ~1 MGD and a wide range of UV doses (400 – 4000 mJ cm-2). A model was developed that combines a dose model in the photoreactor with a pH-dependent photochemical kinetic model that employed the measured molar extinction coefficient and quantum yield values. This model can predict the log reductions of the tested organic compounds with reasonable accuracy.
