Scott Craig is a Principal at CDM Smith with over 20 years of experience in a variety of large-scale water resources and water reclamation projects. He has led diverse project teams in development of cost-effective long-term facilities plans, modeling and implementation of recommended programs throughout the Northeast including leveraging data and technology for improved proactive management of collection systems. Mr. Craig holds an M.S. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Tufts University and a B.S in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rochester.

A Digital Twin is More Than Hype: How Hartford MDC is Putting It to Use for Resilient Capital Improvements Planning

Abstract

In the digital era, utilities are bombarded with new technology solutions that promise to solve their challenges. Wading through the hype of these promises is difficult, but critical if utilities are going to be successful at delivering resilient systems for the future. The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) of Greater Hartford, Connecticut turned to a digital twin to help analyze and predict system performance, a tool that delivers real-time insights from the MDC’s system, as well as forecasts future performance of planned improvements to ensure that the MDC will be successful with its long-term planning objectives. This technology has helped the MDC adapt its current operating procedures and incorporate resiliency into its long-term capital improvements. Resiliency can be difficult to plan for given changing and intensifying weather patterns, however, the tool delivers Hartford insight into likely future performance of planned facilities for each storm event that occurs across its system. Leveraging its digital twin, the MDC has a mechanism to apply analysis of its system performance with simulated performances of future build-out scenarios to evaluate effectiveness and the overall future system’s success.
