Bryce Figdore is a senior wastewater process engineer with HDR based in Bellevue, WA. Bryce has Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate degrees, respectively, from Penn State, Villanova, and the University of Washington. He is enthusiastic about applying his expertise in biological nutrient removal to deliver robust and innovative wastewater treatment solutions. Outside of these pursuits, Bryce enjoys fly fishing, tennis, and hiking with his family.

Solids Handling and Treatment Performance with Waste Activated Sludge from the NeredaÂ® Aerobic Granular Sludge Process: Comparisons to Conventional Activated Sludge

Abstract

This paper presents a collection of results addressing solids yield, digestion, and dewatering performance of the Nereda® aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process. Data are drawn from bench and full-scale studies with emphasis on comparisons to waste activated sludge (WAS) from conventional flocculent activated sludge (CAS) processes. Collectively, bench and full-scale data show that solids yield, digestion, dewatering, and other aspects related to solids handling were generally comparable for Nereda AGS WAS and CAS WAS operated for biological nutient removal and/or treating the same wastewater stream. Thus, there do not appear to be significant solids handling impacts from potential full-scale implementation of Nereda. In many but not all cases solids handling results with AGS WAS were more favorable than those obtained with CAS WAS.

Technology Evaluation Framework Opens Pathway to Adoption of Emerging and Innovative Technologies

Abstract

This paper describes the technology evaluation framework developed by the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD). The framework was developed to create a feasible pathway for realizing potential benefits of new technologies, allowing them to be considered as viable alternatives to conventional technologies for a generally conservative utility. A case study applying the framework to address anticipated effluent ammonia limits for PWD’s water pollution control plants (WPCPs) is also presented. One promising high-impact technology for ammonia removal, Nuvoda mobile organic biofilm (MOBTM; hereafter “MOB”), was fast-tracked. It shows potential to substantially reduce lifecycle costs for ammonia removal compliance and is currently in the execution phase of testing. In parallel, PWD is also in the discovery phase of identifying and screening other potentially viable technologies and innovative approaches to diversify its portfolio of cost-saving ammonia removal alternatives.

A technology evaluation framework can be used to create a feasible pathway for realizing benefits of new technologies, allowing them to be considered as viable alternatives and avoid being constrained to established technologies or ad-hoc selection of new technologies. This case study presents Philadelphia Water Department's efforts to evaluate innovative nutrient removal technologies that have potential for substantial capital and operational cost savings over conventional treatment methods.
