Hirani, Zakir

Zakir Hirani is a Senior Principal and Southern California Wastewater/Water Reuse Lead at Stantec. He has process design expertise in wastewater and advanced water treatment (AWT) for water reuse applications with emphasis on MF/UF, MBR and RO processes. Some of his AWT projects include City of San Diego's AWT Facility at the North City Water Reclamation Plant, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California's AWT Facilities at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, and City of Los Angeles' AWT Facilities at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. He has authored over 70 papers and publications in national and international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.

City of Los Angeles Evaluating MBR-based Potable Reuse Train via Hyperion MBR Pilot Facility

Abstract

To meet the Mayor’s goals of 70% of water sourced locally and 100% wastewater beneficially reused by 2035, the City of Los Angeles’ (City) largest wastewater treatment plant, Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (HWRP), will treat and recycle its flows for beneficial reuse. The City is considering upgrading HWRP’s existing secondary process, high-purity oxygen activated sludge (HPOAS) that produces a non-nitrified secondary effluent, to membrane bioreactor (MBR) to produce nitrified and denitrified, membrane-filtered effluent to be fed directly to reverse osmosis (RO). In order to evaluate the MBR process and its compatibility with the RO process, the City retained the Carollo/Stantec team to design a 1.0-million gallons per day (MGD) pilot facility at the HWRP consisting of MBR and RO systems, referred to as Hyperion MBR Pilot Facility. The pilot facility will generate data for the regulatory approval of the process train and design of the full-scale advanced water purification facility (AWPF).

Economics of Potable Reuse with Partial Reverse Osmosis Treatment Schemes for Inland Communities

Abstract

This paper presents a techno-economic analysis of Advanced Water Treatment (AWT) Systems for partial Reverse Osmosis (RO) treatment schemes for potable reuse applications for inland utilities. Treatment process design considerations for two scenarios of partial RO treatment schemes for potable reuse are explored and expected produced water quality was identified. Capital and operating costs for each treatment scenario are presented and compared with baseline advanced treatment alternatives using RO-based Advanced Treatment (RBAT) and Carbonbased Advanced Treatment (CBAT). This study shows a partial RO treatment train can be used cost-effectively to provide inorganics removal required for some inland communities. Treatment trains decisions can be dependent on social, environmental, technical, economic, and regulatory considerations. This study informs decision-making about potable reuse treatment trains by comparing the planning level cost estimates and technical performance of partial RO potable reuse treatment scenarios for inland communities.
