Khajouei, Golnoosh

Golnoosh is a Ph.D. candidate at West Virginia University. She is working on NSF and DOE funded projects. Her work focuses on Treatment, Management and Recovery of wastewater generated in the oil and gas production industry called produced water. Before coming to the US, she got her Bachelor and Master of Sciences from top universities in Iran and was admitted to WVU in Fall 2015. During her Ph.D. program, she won Ph.D. student departmental fellowship for two consecutive years. Also, in 2019, she was selected as one of the finalists of Three Minutes Thesis (3MT) competition at WVU.

Co-treatment of Produced Water and Blowdown Water to Reduce Chemical and Energy Footprints for Water Reuse and Byproduct Generation

Abstract

This study examined the feasibility of a process designed to create chemical and energy synergism from co-treatment of field-collected blowdown (BD) water and produced water (PW). A three-stage treatment process consisting of softening, activated carbon (AC) filtration, and reverse osmosis (RO) was used to generate a permeate stream for reuse and a rejected to be further concentrated to generate a saleable brine. Mixing the two waters at a BD: PW volumetric ratio of 10:1 without any chemical addition resulted in >90% Ba removal. The softening treatment using sodium hydroxide and carbonate furthered remove other scale-forming ions and resulted in >99% removal of divalent metals(Ca2+ and Mg2+, Ba2+, and Sr2+). Organic matter removal was negligible during softening while >90% TOC removal was achieved by activated carbon filtration. The mixing of two waters and the softening and AC treatment resulted in feed water to RO containing TDS of 21.6 g/L, and the RO treatment further concentrated the TDS to 40 g/L. For all RO experiments, the TDS rejection was between 97-99% and there were no detectable amounts of TOC and multivalent metals in the permeate stream. Compared to the treatment of BD alone, mixing the two waters would be more energy efficient for downstream thermal desalination to economically concentrate the RO reject to a product of commercial use (10-lb brine).

The Future is Now: Concentrate Management is Transforming Municipal and Industrial Water Supply

Abstract

Disposal of high-salinity concentrate generated from municipal facilities and industries (e.g., energy, semiconductor facilities) can have adverse environmental impacts. To address this issue, concentrate treatment seems to be a promising option to eliminate the wastewater discharge, while recovering extra water and valuable materials such as salts. This can be achieved through concentrate minimization and zero liquid discharge strategies. This paper presents six case studies that were implemented in the industrial and municipal sectors across the country to minimize concentrate, increase water recovery, and extract valuable resources.

Recent technological advancements have enabled desalination along with concentrate minimization to become a viable option for communities and industries looking to diversify their water supply. In this review paper, six case studies examining the various concentrate minimization technologies and zero-liquid discharge technologies that were adopted in the industrial and municipal sectors across the United States to minimize concentrate and recover water are discussed.
