Bumkyu Kim (BK) is a PhD candidate at University of Notre Dame and expect to graduate in early 2022. He is currently looking for post-doc position. His main research focus on biofilms and predation, especially in MABRs. His on-going research goal is to develop the advanced kinetic model for protozoan growth and predation in biofilm systems. Also, he believe the potential of using the efficient engineered culture for treatment system.

The effects of low-EPS producing bacteria on the performance of the membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) and membrane bioreactor (MBRs): Experimental and modeling study

Abstract

The objective of this study was to see the effects of EPS on the kinetic, performance, biofilm structure, and biofouling of membrane reactor. We used Pseudomonas aeruginosa was as a target organism. P. aeruginosa produces three main types of EPS: alginate, Pel and PsI. The effect of EPS was studied by comparing the wild type with the genetically modified P. aeruginosa with suppressed Pel production (mutant). At steady-state for the MABR reactor, the biofilm thickness for the mutant culture was smaller than the wild type, while the quality effluent sCOD for the mutant culture was better than the wild type. Also, the effluent suspended solids decreased with the GMO culture. For ultrafiltration membrane reactor (UMR), there was no significant difference of sCOD between the wild type and mutant culture. However, the significant biofouling occurred much later for the mutant culture than the wild type.

Biofilm formation is key to many bioreactors, but biofilm characteristics can affect performance. We explored the effects of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production on two biofilm reactors. Two strains were used: a “wild type,” and a modified strain with suppressed EPS production. For a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR), suppressed EPS (1) lowered biofilm thickness, (2) improved effluent quality, and (3) lowered effluent solids. For an ultrafiltration membrane reactor (UMR), suppressed EPS (1) decreased biofouling and (2) extended running time of reactor before backwashing. Results suggest that selecting for species with lower EPS production may improve treatment.
