Mingu Kim is a post-doctoral associate at Western University where he also earned his doctoral degree in Environmental Engineering. His PhD and post-doctoral research have focused on biological nutrient removal, anaerobic digestion, food waste co-digestion, emerging contaminants, and cellulose degradation. He is the author and co-author of 30 published articles.

Impact of Temperature on Cellulose Degradation in Wastewater Treatment

Abstract

This study investigated the degradation of cellulose in SBR systems at different temperatures (10, 17, 27, and 33°C) and two SRTs (15 and 3 days) to explore the impact of operational conditions on cellulose removal. Cellulose concentrations in mixed liquor at different temperatures were 18-81 mg/L at SRT of 15 days and 31-57 mg/L at SRT of 3 days, accounting for only 1%-5% of MLSS by weight. Cellulose effluent concentrations at different temperatures were similar i.e. 2-4 mg/L at both SRTs. Degradation efficiency of cellulose increased with higher temperature i.e. 80%-90% at an SRT of 15 days and 78%-85% at an SRT of 3 days. The estimated biomass-specific degradation rates were 13-24 mg cellulose/gVSS/day at an SRT of 15 days and 96-104 mg cellulose/gVSS/day at an SRT of 3 days. Temperature correction factors were estimated as 1.025 (SRT of 15 days) and 1.003 (SRT of 3 days).
