Equilibrium Temperature Modeling at a Gulf Coast Refinery: Application of Site-Specific Daily Bio-Heat Generation Factor

Abstract

In 2014, Kirkland et al proposed the use of a monthly site-specific biological heat generation factor as an innovative approach to improve the biochemical heat gain estimation in the Argaman and Adams equilibrium temperature model for activated sludge systems. In 2016, Kirkland et al expanded the work from 2014 and showed that the site-specific monthly bio-heat generation factor was applicable to refineries along the Gulf Coast. As part of ongoing work, the authors have modified the Argaman and Adams equilibrium temperature model from a monthly prediction to a daily prediction – transitioning from a monthly static model to a daily model that is nearing dynamic. This paper presents an additional evaluation and model of the site-specific bio-heat generation factor (now on a daily basis) and continues to expand its use to the petroleum refining industry. The importance of this work is to provide a model that is relatively close to dynamic that could be used to help control the activated sludge process proactively, quickly and more reliably. A case study of an above-ground, steel aeration basin in a gulf coast refinery wastewater treatment plant is included to show the sensitivity of the proposed daily temperature model.

Hydrogen from Treated Municipal Effluent: Feasibility Assessment for Scottish Water

Abstract

Hydrogen has gained tremendous attention and momentum throughout the world in 2020 and has continued into 2021. This paper provides an example of how hydrogen could be produced from treated municipal wastewater for use in commercial and personal transportation. A feasibility assessment for a municipal treatment plant near Glasgow, Scotland is the subject of the case history. Background information has been summarized to provide context for the current position on hydrogen as a major clean energy source in Europe and the United States.
