Ms. Madden has been working for CDM Smith in Boston for over 35 years and during this time seen the industry move from primary treatment, to secondary treatment, to nutrient removal, and now resource recovery. Her passion lies in providing clients with cost-effective sustainable solutions that connect the dots in the water-energy-food nexus. Jane is a graduate of the University of Vermont, enjoys spending time in the mountains, lakes and oceans in and around New England. Jane has two adult children, Rebecca and Miles, who are the light of her life.

Lessons Learned from 20-years of Low-Level Phosphorus Removal

Abstract

The lessons learned from more than two decades of planning, design, construction and operation of numerous add-on treatment facilities of varying sizes to meet low-level phosphorus (P) will assist communities that are just now receiving phosphorus limits in their discharge permits. Numerous technologies have proven capable of achieving much lower levels of phosphorus than thought possible 20 years ago. This allows technologies to be selected based on cost criteria and non-cost criteria other than process performance. Overall considerations related to permit language, the impacts of soluble non-reactive phosphorus, coagulant selection and mixing, metals limits, and the use of real-time analyzers for process optimization should be investigated during planning and design since they can be just as critical to achieving treatment goals as the process selected.

The Water-Energy-Food Nexus Begins at Home

Abstract

The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) owns and operates the largest single-site, peak flow, water resource recovery facility (WRRF) in the nation with the capacity to treat up to 6,435 MLD (1,700 mgd), with an average daily flow of about 2,385 MLD (630 mgd), and peak secondary treatment capacity of 3,520 MLD (930 mgd). In 2017 GLWA embarked on a 40-year, system-wide Wastewater Master Plan for its wastewater service area in metropolitan Detroit. The purpose of the Master Plan was to assess the broad needs of the GLWA system and develop solutions to improve system efficiency in the collection and treatment systems and improve receiving water quality. As a part of this Master Plan, the WRRF was assessed to present a long-term vision of the capital needs of the facility. Recommendations to replace aging assets with more efficient, up-to-date treatment processes were vetted, and phased to ensure uninterrupted operation of the facility. The Master Plan recommendations were designed to move the WRRF forward in a logical fashion with an eye towards maintaining its Utility of the Future status, where precious resources are recovered in a sustainable fashion. Embedded in the outcomes are sustainable practices which speak to the water-energy-food nexus.
